A new generation of progestogens (desogestrel, norgestimate, gestodene) derived from levonorgestrel gives rise to considerably fewer male (androgenic) characteristics and is therefore now being used in the combined oral contraceptive pill (for example, in Marvelon and Mercilon) as well as being studied for possible future use in opposed HRT.

Natural oestrogens, especially those administered non-orally, have little effect on triglyceride levels. Progestogens, especially those of high androgenic properties (norethisterone and levonorgestrel), tend to lower triglycerides. Depending on the type and dosage, oestrogen can lower the harmful LDL cholesterol and raise the protective HDL and HDL, cholesterol, but progestogens (depending on type and dosage) can work in the opposite way, thus cancelling out the benefits certain oestrogens have on lipids. Some progestogens (again, norethisterone and levonorgestrel) can cause more PMS-type symptoms than others when used in opposed HRT, including bloating, increased breast tenderness and mood swings. Dydrogesterone is less likely to do so.
